2008: 206. Shakespeare Wrote For Money

“It’s been an unsettling couple of months.”

Shakespeare Wrote For Money, Nick Hornby

This is the third, and alas, the final collection of Nick Hornby’s “Stuff I’ve Been Reading” columns from The Believer magazine (he has given up the column).  I enjoyed this collection so - as much as the previous two (The Polysyllabic Spree and Housekeeping vs. the Dirt), and as much as the Hornby novels I’ve read this year.  I think that I might be a Hornby superfan (though I have two books of his still to read!).  He has such a nice light tone to his writing, making it painless to read, while still having actual legitimately interesting things to say.  Hornby’s column is pretty simple - he just writes about what he read that month (with the caveat that if he hated something, he just won’t mention it), and he makes it fascinating (the goal of this blog, but alas, probably not the result, particularly when, as now, I am slogging through to catch up with the end of the year).  I wish he’d keep writing the column, and I could keep reading it.
