2008: 186. My Most Excellent Year

“Note to Ms. Lafontaine: I didn’t mean to give you a hard time about the title of this assignment, but “My Totally Excellent Year” would have been like so 1995 we’d have been laughed out of Brookline if anybody found out.”

My Most Excellent Year: A Novel of Love, Mary Poppins & Fenway Park, Steve Kluger

This is a totally charming young adult novel, about the freshman year of three teenagers - TC and Augie (who have been best friends/brothers since TC’s mother died when they were in the third grade) and Allie who moves to town after living life in the fast lane as the child of diplomats, and how they befriend a young deaf boy, Hucky Harper, and generally have the most excellent year of their lives.  Over the course of it TC and Allie fall in love, Augie comes out of the closet, and Hucky finds a family.  It is all a fantasy - really it is all a little too pat - all charm and no reality at all (nothing bad happens, period, just one lovely set piece after another) - but it such a fun little book that its hard to quibble, and it’s written well enough to make it the kind of escapist reading that won’t rot your brain.  I’d love to sink into more Kluger - I can’t think of a better book to read in a bubble bath.
